Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian has announced a major infrastructure upgrade worth ₹100 crore for the Government Raja Mirasudar General Hospital in Thanjavur. This decision follows a fire that broke out in the maternity block of the hospital on April 24 due to an air-conditioner malfunction.
Swift Evacuation Prevents Casualties
As reported by TOI, during the incident, hospital authorities safely evacuated around 150 people, including patients and staff, preventing any casualties. Minister Subramanian, who inspected the site, emphasized the growing trust in the government hospital. “The number of patients visiting GH has doubled in recent years as more people now prefer government facilities over private hospitals,” he said.
Inauguration of New Facilities at Thanjavur Medical College Hospital
In addition to inspecting the fire-affected hospital, the minister inaugurated several new facilities at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. These include:
- A Master Health Checkup Centre built at ₹5 crore
- A 28-bed pay ward unit constructed at ₹1.34 crore
- A multi-specialty clinic for transgender individuals set up at ₹15 lakh
Expansion of Primary Healthcare Infrastructure
To further strengthen the rural healthcare system, the minister opened:
- Three new Primary Health Centres (PHCs)
- Additional buildings for healthcare services
- Eight Health Sub-Centre (HSC) buildings
- One PHC laboratory
- A Block General Health Unit (BGHU)
Foundation Laid for 13 New Healthcare Structures
Continuing his visit, Subramanian laid foundation stones for 13 new buildings valued at ₹7.45 crore. These include:
- Two PHC buildings
- Six HSC buildings
- Five BGHU buildings

Several prominent officials and elected representatives joined the event. These included Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhian, Thanjavur Collector B Priyanka Pankajam, Rajya Sabha MP S Kalyanasundaram, MPs S Murasoli, Durai Chandrasekaran, T K G Neelamegam, and N Ashok Kumar, as well as MCH Dean G Balasubramanian and other government officials.
