A 9-month-old male infant has undergone a life-saving surgical procedure at a renowned city hospital to treat a rare congenital heart condition known as Supracardiac Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC). The surgical team, led by esteemed paediatric cardiac surgeon Dr.Sandeep Khanzode and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr.Anand Sancheti, successfully performed the intricate operation at New Era Mother and Child Care Hospital. The expertise of anaesthesiologist Dr.Shrikant Bobade and a team of paediatric critical intensivists, headed by Dr.Anand Bhutada, also played a crucial role in the surgery’s success.

TAPVC is a complex congenital heart defect characterized by abnormal connections between the pulmonary veins responsible for carrying oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the heart. In the case of Supracardiac TAPVC, these abnormal connections occur between the veins that drain blood into the heart, resulting in severe heart-lung complications that can be life-threatening. The surgical team skillfully corrected the infant’s heart defect, restoring normal blood flow and averting potential fatality.

Dr.Sancheti expressed pride in the team’s dedication and expertise, which led to the successful correction of Supracardiac TAPVC in such a nascent patient. He emphasized the importance of early intervention for children with congenital heart conditions to ensure their proper growth and a chance at a normal life.

Dr.Bhutada, the Director of New Era’s Mother and Child Hospital, acknowledged the challenges posed by the procedure, as TAPVC occurs in a very limited number of cases per live birth and accounts for only a small percentage of all congenital heart defects. He highlighted the rarity of this specific case and attributed its success to the advanced medical infrastructure and skilled professionals in Nagpur.
