In a major development aimed at fostering research and academic collaboration, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research and academic activities, particularly focusing on tribal health.

The non-binding and non-financial agreement reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to enhance healthcare outcomes in tribal and marginalized communities. The MoU was signed by
Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur, and Lt. Gen. Madhuri Kanitkar, Vice-Chancellor of MUHS, Nashik, with key officials from both organizations present.

The partnership will concentrate on critical research projects led by the Department of Tribal Health at the MUHS Regional Center, Nagpur, and the MUHS Chair of Excellence in Tribal Health Research. Tribal communities in India often encounter significant health challenges due to factors like geographical isolation, limited access to healthcare, and socioeconomic inequalities.

Addressing these issues requires specialized research to develop targeted healthcare interventions and policies. Through this collaboration, AIIMS Nagpur and MUHS aim to bridge healthcare gaps and improve the overall well-being of tribal populations in Maharashtra.

Prof. Dr. Sanjeev Choudhary, an orthopedic surgeon and coordinator, highlighted the significance of the initiative, emphasizing the need for research tailored to the unique healthcare needs of tribal populations. He noted that this collaboration could have a profound impact on improving healthcare delivery systems for these communities.

Lt. Gen. Madhuri Kanitkar and Dr. Joshi emphasized that the partnership between AIIMS Nagpur and MUHS marks a significant step toward achieving greater health equity in Maharashtra, particularly for underprivileged tribal communities. The focus on tribal health will include research on prevalent diseases, innovative healthcare delivery models, and the integration of traditional knowledge with modern medical practices to enhance health outcomes.

As reported by pib.gov.in, the MoU sets the stage for both institutions to collaborate on specific research and academic projects, which will be formalized through separate Project Specific Agreements (PSA). The partnership ensures the confidentiality of shared information, respect for intellectual property rights, and adherence to relevant regulations as both institutions embark on this mutually beneficial journey.
