The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur recently unveiled a state-of-the-art brachytherapy machine for radiation therapy, marking a significant advancement in cancer treatment. Dr. P P Joshi, the executive director and CEO of AIIMS Nagpur, emphasized the machine’s importance, stating that it enables the delivery of precise radiation directly to cancer cells, benefiting over 90% of cancer patients who require radiotherapy.
Dr. Joshi highlighted the machine’s capability to administer higher radiation doses directly to the cancerous tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy cells. This precision enhances the effectiveness of treatment, potentially leading to higher cure rates and increased survival rates. Additionally, the targeted approach is expected to reduce side effects, thereby improving the overall quality of life during treatment.
As reported by Times of India, AIIMS Nagpur’s commitment to cancer care extends beyond technology investment. They have dedicated significant resources to cancer treatment, with the brachytherapy machine alone costing over ₹2 crore, and another advanced machine, the linear accelerator, valued at ₹20 crore. Moreover, the institute has implemented special programs to provide emotional and financial support to cancer patients and their families, ensuring comprehensive care throughout their journey.
