AIIMS Nagpur Opens Advanced Sleep Disorder Lab

State-of-the-Art Facility to Address Sleep Disorders

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur has launched a cutting-edge Sleep Lab to diagnose and treat sleep disorders, with a primary focus on sleep apnea. Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur, formally inaugurated the facility, which aims to help thousands of patients struggling with sleep-related health issues.

Enhancing Early Diagnosis and Treatment

Highlighting the importance of sleep health, Dr. Joshi emphasized that sleep disorders often go unnoticed despite their significant impact on overall well-being. “This Sleep Lab will facilitate early diagnosis and timely intervention, improving patients’ quality of life and preventing severe complications,” he stated.

Bringing Advanced Sleep Diagnostics Closer to Patients

Previously, many patients had to travel long distances for accurate sleep disorder diagnoses. With this new facility, AIIMS Nagpur ensures that advanced sleep diagnostics are now accessible locally. Dr. Joshi noted that the initiative will not only treat patients but also raise public awareness. He emphasized the health risks associated with sleep disorders.

Specialized Testing and Expert Supervision

As reported by TOI, Operating under the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, the Sleep Lab is led by Dr. Sryma P.B., Associate Professor. The facility conducts polysomnography (sleep studies), a non-invasive overnight test that monitors:

  • Brain activity
  • Heart rate
  • Breathing patterns
  • Oxygen levels
  • Other vital signs

This diagnostic tool helps detect conditions like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), one of the most prevalent and severe sleep disorders.

Growing Concerns Over Sleep Disorders in India

According to studies, nearly 11% of Indian adults (around 104 million people) suffer from OSA. If left untreated, it can lead to hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and chronic fatigue, ultimately affecting productivity and mental well-being.

“Many Indians believe snoring is a sign of good sleep, but it can indicate serious sleep disorders,” said Dr. Sryma P.B. “With this Sleep Lab, we aim to correct these misconceptions and provide timely interventions.”

Link Between Obesity and Sleep Disorders

Obesity, a major risk factor for sleep apnea, is on the rise in India. Unfortunately, sleep disorders remain underdiagnosed due to a lack of awareness and specialized testing facilities. The AIIMS Nagpur Sleep Lab seeks to bridge this gap by offering comprehensive diagnostic and treatment solutions.
