The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, is set to establish a new Critical Care Block at the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, announced AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas on Monday. The facility, expected to be operational within two years, will add 200 beds to the hospital’s capacity, easing the burden on the current Emergency ward, which also has 200 beds.

With 700 to 800 patients visiting the AIIMS Emergency daily, many face difficulties in securing admissions due to limited bed availability. The new block, equipped with advanced medical technologies, aims to address this issue by catering to serious and urgent cases.

In addition to the Critical Care Block, plans are underway to establish an Infectious Diseases Centre to enhance care for patients with communicable diseases.

As reported by economictimes, Dr. Srinivas also revealed the development of a One AIIMS Referral Policy to streamline patient referrals across AIIMS institutions nationwide. Furthermore, the teleconsultation network launched during the COVID-19 pandemic is being reinforced to improve remote access to medical expertise.
