AOI at Citizens Hospital Saves 93-Year-Old with Advanced Colon Cancer

The American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Citizens Specialty Hospital in Hyderabad successfully treated a 93-year-old man diagnosed with ascending colon cancer, demonstrating their expertise in advanced cancer care and minimally invasive surgery. The patient, Mr. Gheesaram, had experienced abdominal pain and weight loss for two months. After thorough evaluation, the surgical team performed a complex laparoscopic-assisted radical right hemicolectomy, removing part of the right colon and reconnecting the remaining intestine.

Despite the challenge posed by the patient’s advanced age, the team at AOI carried out the procedure with precision. Mr. Gheesaram made a steady recovery and was discharged in stable condition five days after surgery. Harish Trivedi, CEO of CTSI – South Asia, emphasized that this case underscores AOI’s expertise and innovation, setting new benchmarks in cancer treatment and offering world-class care even for complex cases.

The minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure, known for reducing recovery time and surgical risks, was particularly beneficial for the elderly patient. Advanced laparoscopic techniques and complex anesthesia monitoring ensured the safe and effective removal of the affected colon section.

Dr. Pratap Varma, the lead surgeon, noted that while the risks were significant due to Mr. Gheesaram’s age, the minimally invasive techniques and the patient’s resilience allowed for a successful outcome. AOI will continue to monitor the patient’s recovery and remains committed to delivering top-tier cancer care as a leader in oncology treatment in India.
