In a significant medical achievement, Apollo Hospitals Bhubaneswar has successfully performed two liver transplants within two weeks, joining the ranks of facilities in the city offering cadaveric liver transplantation.
The hospital conducted its first living donor liver transplant on December 18, followed by its inaugural cadaveric liver transplant on January 4. Both recipients are recovering well and in stable condition.
Led by a dedicated team of transplant surgeons under the guidance of Dr. Soumen Roy, the first successful procedure involved a 58-year-old Cuttack resident, Subrat Kumar Mishra. Mishra, who had been battling decompensated chronic liver disease for three years, experienced worsening health leading to liver failure. A portion of his sister-in-law’s liver was transplanted, marking a turning point in his treatment. The donor was discharged 10 days post-surgery, and the recipient was discharged on Wednesday.
Dr. Sathi, addressing TNIE, noted, “Despite the extensive clearances required for liver transplantation, the patient was managed through chronic liver failure episodes before becoming fit for surgery. With this milestone, patients in Odisha no longer need to travel to other cities for liver transplants. We have established a dedicated unit to provide comprehensive care for complex liver and gastrointestinal conditions.”
This achievement highlights Apollo Hospitals’ commitment to advancing specialized medical care in the region, ensuring better access to life-saving treatments for local patients.
