In a groundbreaking achievement, the Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi Cantonment, has successfully performed India’s “first-ever” Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation using the HeartMate 3 device in a government healthcare institution. The procedure was conducted on a 49-year-old woman, the wife of an armed forces veteran, who had been awaiting a heart transplant for over two years, the Ministry of Defence announced on Wednesday.
The LVAD, often referred to as a “mechanical heart,” acts as a life-saving bridge for patients suffering from end-stage heart failure. The HeartMate 3 device, a state-of-the-art technology, enhances heart function and offers renewed hope for patients with severe cardiac conditions.
“This historic first also marks a major milestone for the Armed Forces Medical Services,” the ministry said in its statement, highlighting the advanced capabilities of the Army Hospital (R&R) in providing cutting-edge medical care.
As reported by economictimes, the patient is currently recovering steadily under medical supervision, reflecting the success of the hospital’s highly skilled team.
“This achievement underscores the hospital’s relentless pursuit of excellence in medical care and solidifies its position as a leader in delivering advanced healthcare services,” the statement added.
This milestone is expected to set a new benchmark in government healthcare and further strengthen India’s capabilities in managing complex cardiac conditions.
