In a landmark achievement, the ophthalmology department at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, has successfully performed a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery using a 3D microscope, the Defence Ministry announced on Saturday.
First-of-Its-Kind Innovation in Armed Forces
Marking a unique milestone, the Defence Ministry stated,
“In a first and a unique milestone for the armed forces, the department of ophthalmology at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, has performed a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery using a 3D microscope.”
This pioneering initiative highlights the Indian Army’s continuous efforts to introduce advanced medical technologies for the benefit of its personnel and their families.
Advantages of 3D Visualisation in Eye Surgery
As reported by theprint, the three-dimensional visualisation system offers significant benefits for various eye surgeries, including:
- Squint correction
- Cataract surgery
- Corneal treatments
- Glaucoma procedures
- Retinal surgeries
Utilising special 3D polarisation glasses and a 55-inch 4K Ultra-HD display, the system allows for enhanced precision and efficiency.
According to the ministry, the potential advantages over conventional microscopes include:
- Reduced surgical time and complication rates
- Lower endoilluminator power requirements
- Minimised photo-toxicity
- Better performance in complicated or uncommon surgical situations
- Higher satisfaction scores among surgeons and nurses
Commitment to Top-Tier Medical Services
Emphasising the broader vision, the Defence Ministry added,
“This initiative is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Indian Army in ensuring that top-tier medical services reach our clientele at the apex institutes.”
With this facility, Army Hospital (R&R) aims to further enhance its capabilities in providing cutting-edge eye care services, ensuring better outcomes for a wide range of ocular conditions.
