BHU scientist gets grant for research on low-cost anti-diabetic medications

A scientist from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been awarded a coveted project on C-glycoside synthesis by the SERB-DST, Government of India.

Dr. Nazar Hussain, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Science at BHU will conduct research on anti-diabetic medications using novel cost-effective approaches as part of the project, reported TOI.

C-glycosides are carbohydrate compounds that are commonly utilized in the treatment of diabetes. Dr. Hussain’s research on this project will be funded by a grant of around Rs 40 lakh. The initiative also seeks to synthesize certain polyphenolic C- glycosides in addition to anti-diabetic medicines.

Polyphenolic chemicals have been used to treat a variety of viral illnesses. This research will also look into the possibilities of mixing polyphenols with carbohydrates to test their anti-viral properties against a variety of viruses, including covid. This will be one of the country’s largest studies of its sort. It is a source of tremendous pleasure for Banaras Hindu University that the Department of Medicinal Chemistry has been handed a project of such crucial importance and significance.
