Breakthrough Procedure at Cooper Hospital Rescues Patient from Brain Aneurysm

A pioneering intervention conducted by neurologists at Cooper Hospital, Juhu, has rescued a 59-year-old woman from a critical condition following a ruptured brain aneurysm. Dr. Shailesh Mohite, the dean, disclosed that Cooper Hospital is now one of 11 centers across India employing the cutting-edge Trenza embolization device.

The patient initially presented with symptoms of headache and vomiting. Diagnostic scans unveiled a ruptured aneurysm, a condition where an artery’s wall weakens and bursts open.

Dr. Pradyumna Oak, the neurologist, highlighted the efficacy of coil implant devices in treating aneurysms, explaining that the Trenza device is inserted via catheter to halt bleeding by filling the aneurysm.

As reported by Times of India, this groundbreaking procedure, which would typically cost over Rs 10 lakh in private hospitals, was made accessible to the patient’s family at a nominal charge by Cooper Hospital. The device’s cost, approximately Rs 2.5 lakh, was subsidized with Rs 1.5 lakh from the state insurance scheme and additional contributions from private donors.

Dr. Oak emphasized the Trenza device’s advantage: it obviates the need for blood-thinning medications, unlike other surgical options. D. Sudhakar Shinde, BMC’s additional commissioner, hailed the provision of modern services to Mumbaikars, underscoring the significance of such complex surgeries at affordable rates in municipal hospitals.
