CureBay, a rural-focused healthcare platform, has raised $21 million in a Series B funding round led by Bertelsmann India Investments. The round also included participation from Elevar Equity and the UK’s development finance institution, British International Investment (BII).
Fueling Technology Upgrades and Geographic Expansion
With the new capital, CureBay plans to strengthen its technology infrastructure, enhance its proprietary tech stack, and expand its hybrid healthcare model across more Indian states. The company aims to grow its presence into Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, while investing in workflow automation and predictive care tools tailored for rural populations.
A Vision Rooted in Rural Empowerment
Founded in 2021 by Priyadarshi Mohapatra, Shobhan Mahapatra, and Sanjay Swain, CureBay currently operates over 150 eClinics across Odisha and Chhattisgarh. These clinics offer a full spectrum of services—including doctor consultations, diagnostics, pharmacy support, and surgical referrals.
“We are focused on solving access challenges in underserved regions,” said Priyadarshi Mohapatra, CureBay’s Founder and CEO. “This funding supports our next phase of growth—developing our tech, building our team, and scaling operations.”
Challenging Myths About Rural Healthcare
Mohapatra also emphasized that rural India’s primary issue isn’t affordability, but access.
“It’s a myth that rural India can’t pay. They often spend more than urban counterparts. But for them, seeing a doctor means losing a day’s income, which deters timely care,” he told YourStory.
Many rural patients also fall prey to middlemen and healthcare brokers when they visit district hospitals, leading to substandard care.
Human-Centered Concierge Support to Guide Patients
To bridge this trust and access gap, CureBay introduced concierge-style support. When patients are referred to tertiary hospitals, the company ensures someone receives them, offers guidance, and supports them throughout the medical process—just like a family doctor would.
This initiative helps reduce fear and confusion while ensuring patients receive appropriate care.
A Hybrid Model That Delivers the Full Continuum of Care
CureBay operates a hybrid care delivery system that integrates digital platforms with physical eClinics. Its unique “circle” model supports each cluster with logistics, diagnostic handling, and local medical networks.
“While most rural healthcare solutions are fragmented, CureBay delivers an end-to-end care model—combining consultations, diagnostics, pharmacy access, and surgical referrals under one platform,” said Pankaj Makkar, Managing Director at Bertelsmann India Investments.
Pioneering Preventive Care in Rural India
In addition to acute care, CureBay also focuses on preventive health. It has moved over 100,000 rural patients into a subscription-based preventive care program—a significant milestone, even when compared to urban healthcare models.
The programme currently has 90,000 active users, with a renewal rate exceeding 60%, indicating strong trust and engagement.
“Even urban India hasn’t cracked preventive care the way we have,” noted Mohapatra.
Leveraging AI and IoT for Rural Health Innovation
CureBay’s in-house platform utilizes AI, generative AI, and IoT-based diagnostics to enable early disease detection and personalized patient management, making advanced healthcare accessible in remote areas.
A Scalable Vision for Bharat’s Health Revolution
As reported by yourstory, This latest funding round reinforces investor confidence in CureBay’s mission to transform rural healthcare. As Pankaj Makkar stated, “CureBay is making quality healthcare both accessible and affordable for rural communities—delivering a scalable model that can reshape Bharat’s health landscape.”
