Dr. Mumtaz Patel Becomes First Indo-Asian President of the Royal College of Physicians

Dr Mumtaz Patel has made history as the 123rd president of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), becoming the first Indo-Asian Muslim and the fifth female to lead the prestigious UK-based medical organisation. Born to Indian immigrant parents in Lancashire, north-west England, Dr Patel currently works as a consultant nephrologist in Manchester.

A Vision for Change and Modernisation

The RCP, which represents 40,000 medical professionals worldwide, officially announced her appointment, highlighting her groundbreaking achievement. In her first statement, Dr Patel shared her vision: “As president, I will lead the RCP to be the best organisation it can be, supporting our members throughout every career stage to deliver the best possible healthcare for our patients.”

As reported by TOI, she pledged to modernise the college and re-establish it as “the voice of our membership and of medicine,” underscoring her commitment to transformational leadership.

Bringing Experience and Dedication to the Role

With over 20 years of experience within the RCP, Dr Patel brings a values-driven approach, passion, and deep institutional knowledge. Since June 2024, she has served as the senior censor and vice-president for education and training, and has been acting president in recent months.

In her new role, she will chair both the RCP Council and its Board of Trustees, helping to guide the college through its next phase of evolution.

Widespread Support from Medical Community

RCP Board of Trustees Chair, Dr Diana Walford CBE, welcomed Dr Patel’s election with enthusiasm. “I look forward to working with Dr Patel in this important next chapter in the RCP’s long history. The Board will support her efforts to modernise and lead our college with strength and vision,” she said.

Dr. Patel has held several prominent roles within the RCP and NHS England. These include training programme director and regional adviser. She is currently the post-graduate associate dean for the North West. Her notable contributions span across education, training, assessment, and research.

A Call for Decisive Leadership in Modern Healthcare

Professor Jugdeep Dhesi, President of the British Geriatrics Society, acknowledged the significant responsibilities Patel assumes in her new role. He stressed the need for strong leadership to drive reforms in elderly care, calling for comprehensive and person-centred healthcare models. “The president must ensure the health system starts working more effectively for those who use it most,” he noted.
