eKure, in collaboration with the Telangana State TB Cell, has introduced an innovative screening tool for tuberculosis (TB) and other chronic illnesses. Utilizing interactive multilingual WhatsApp bots, the tool facilitates initial presumptive TB detection, aiming to improve access to doctor consultations, affordable health products, and reliable disease-specific information for vulnerable communities.
Initially designed to assess TB symptoms among cab drivers—a high-risk group due to their work conditions—the tool operates on WhatsApp for widespread adoption. The pilot, initiated in June 2023 for cab drivers affiliated with the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union, utilized QR codes in offices and online messaging in WhatsApp and Telegram groups to encourage participation.
Results from the pilot showcased significant engagement, with 3,100 interactions, 155 screenings, and 155 teleconsultations conducted. Notably, five presumptive TB cases were identified and referred for sputum testing, confirming one positive case.
Anshul Khurana, CEO of Entitled Solutions, expressed enthusiasm for addressing healthcare disparities through scalable digital solutions. The partnership aligns with the National TB Elimination Programme, reflecting eKure’s commitment to developing cost-effective digital tools for low-income workers, mitigating financial burdens, and enhancing access to government assistance.
As reported by The Hindu, the screening tool undergoes refinement for improved responses, with plans to expand its reach to a broader population demographic, marking a pivotal step toward inclusive healthcare access.
