Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road achieved a medical feat by successfully performing three intricate procedures in one session – Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), gallbladder stone removal, and colon cancer surgery – in what is believed to be a global first. Led by Dr. Vivek Jawali, Chairman-Cardiac Sciences, and Dr. Ganesh Shenoy, Director-GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery, the complex surgeries were completed within a remarkable 7-hour timeframe.

The patient, Mr. Kopparam, presented with a challenging medical profile, including diabetes and heart disease diagnosed three years prior. Upon discovering gallstones during an ultrasound examination at Fortis Cunningham Road, further investigation revealed an even graver concern: colon cancer. Given the patient’s pre-existing heart condition managed with blood thinners, addressing both issues simultaneously posed significant challenges.

Dr. Jawali emphasized the necessity of stabilizing the patient’s heart with CABG before addressing the colon cancer. Utilizing OPCAB with 4 grafts, the heart surgery was meticulously executed, eliminating the need for a heart-lung machine. Dr. Shenoy highlighted the utilization of advanced laparoscopic techniques for the colon cancer and gallbladder stone removal, ensuring precision and minimizing risks.
