Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Performs Groundbreaking Robotic Hip Replacement for Malaysian Patient

Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, has successfully treated a 53-year-old software engineer from Malaysia, performing a robotic direct anterior hip replacement surgery. The patient, who had been suffering from chronic hip pain due to avascular necrosis (AVN) linked to a previous COVID-19 infection, found relief after years of failed treatments and surgeries at multiple hospitals worldwide.

A team of specialists, led by Dr. Narayan Hulse, Principal Director of Orthopaedics at Fortis Hospital, utilized advanced robotic technology for the minimally invasive procedure. Remarkably, the patient was able to walk with support on the same day of the surgery, demonstrating a swift recovery.

Patient’s Journey

The patient endured three years of severe hip pain, a limp, and significant mobility challenges that impacted his quality of life. Despite consultations at various hospitals in Malaysia and India, prior interventions failed to provide relief. Seeking an innovative solution, he approached Fortis Hospital, where a comprehensive evaluation led to the recommendation of corrective surgeries for both hips, spaced four months apart.

The Procedure

Dr. Hulse explained, “We employed a muscle-sparing, direct anterior robotic technique, which uses a smaller 8 cm incision compared to the traditional 15–20 cm cut. This approach minimizes invasiveness, ensures optimal hip stability, and preserves muscle strength. Robotic technology enabled precise implant positioning and leg-length correction, significantly reducing complication risks.”

As per the press release, the advanced robotic system allowed the patient to begin mobilizing within hours of the surgery. By discharge, he was performing knee-bending exercises, showing no signs of complications, and had a clean surgical wound with no neurological deficits.

Commitment to Innovation

Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head at Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, emphasized the hospital’s dedication to leveraging cutting-edge technology. “At Fortis, we focus on offering precise, minimally invasive surgeries using the latest robotic advancements. These innovations ensure faster recovery and improved patient outcomes, enhancing the overall experience.”

The patient has been advised on post-operative care and rehabilitation, marking the start of a new chapter free from debilitating pain. Fortis Hospital continues to set benchmarks in robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgeries, providing hope to patients worldwide.
