Medical Triumph: Fortis Hospital Saves Patient from Rare Bladder Cancer

72-Year-Old Man Undergoes Life-Saving Surgery for Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi successfully treated a 72-year-old man diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bladder cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma. Dr. Bharath G, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, along with his team, performed a complex seven-hour surgery. Remarkably, the patient was discharged just a week after the procedure, marking a significant milestone in his recovery.

Patient’s Struggle with a Rare Condition

Mr. Chandra (name changed) had been enduring painful urination and an unusual condition that caused urine to pass through his stool. This was due to a fistula, an abnormal connection between the bladder and intestine, which severely impacted his quality of life for over a month. Despite seeking treatment at multiple hospitals, he found no relief. In search of a definitive solution, he turned to Fortis Nagarbhavi for help.

Comprehensive Diagnosis and Urgent Surgical Intervention

Upon admission, a thorough medical evaluation confirmed that Mr. Chandra had squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder, which had already spread to nearby organs. Given the aggressive nature of the disease, Dr. Bharath recommended immediate surgical intervention.

A Complex and Successful Seven-Hour Surgery

As per the press release, Dr. Bharath G explained, “When Mr. Chandra arrived, his condition was critical. After a detailed evaluation, we proceeded with an extensive seven-hour surgery to remove the cancerous tissue and the fistula, along with a section of the intestine and affected lymph nodes. Since the bladder was entirely compromised, we had to create an alternative pathway for urine elimination. While reconstructing a new bladder was not possible, we successfully removed the tumor and reconstructed the affected areas.”

Recovery and Post-Surgical Adaptation

Following the surgery, Mr. Chandra is recovering well. He is adapting to life with a urostoma, an abdominal opening that diverts urine into a collection bag. His resilience, combined with expert post-operative care, has significantly contributed to his smooth recovery.

Commitment to Excellence in Cancer Care

Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head of Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, emphasized the significance of this case, stating, “This case highlights our dedication to providing personalized and innovative medical care. Our team’s expertise in handling such complex surgeries ensures the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
