The country’s healthcare system is on high alert. It is monitoring a recent outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, in Pune. Maharashtra authorities are working closely with the central government to manage and contain the spread of the condition.
Recent Case in Gurgaon Shows Positive Outcome
Doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon successfully treated a GBS case last week. A young girl showed progressive leg weakness and initially became confined to a wheelchair. Neurologist Dr. Praveen Gupta reported that after just five days of treatment, the girl was able to walk again, showing promising recovery prospects for GBS patients.
Understanding GBS: Causes and Symptoms
Guillain-Barre Syndrome is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and various other dysfunctions. Bacterial infections typically trigger it, and it does not spread from person to person.
Rising Cases and Concerns in Maharashtra
Economictimes reports that since last month, at least five deaths in Maharashtra are suspected to have been caused by GBS. In Pune, the number of reported cases has escalated, now reaching 158. The rapid increase in infections has prompted heightened surveillance and medical attention to address the situation effectively.
