Rising Cases and Confirmed Diagnoses
Maharashtra’s Health Department has reported a significant increase in suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases. As of now, authorities have identified 173 suspected cases, with 140 patients confirmed to have the disease. Tragically, six deaths have been recorded, with one confirmed as directly linked to GBS and five classified as suspected cases.
Pune Authorities Take Action
In response to the outbreak, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sealed 30 private water supply plants located in Nanded village, Dhayari, and the surrounding Sinhgad Road areas. These locations have been identified as the epicenter of the outbreak.
Contaminated Water Supply Identified
Health officials determined that several water plants were operating without proper authorization and supplying contaminated water. Water samples collected from these plants tested positive for Escherichia coli bacteria. Furthermore, investigations revealed that some facilities failed to use essential disinfectants such as chlorine to control water contamination.
Nandkishor Jagtap, head of the PMC water supply department, confirmed that immediate action was taken against these plants, including some private RO water suppliers. The authorities are now formulating a standard operating procedure (SoP) to regulate private water sources and ensure safe drinking water for residents.
Current Situation and Patient Status
The State Health Department’s latest update indicates that four additional suspected GBS cases have been reported in Pune district, bringing Maharashtra’s total to 170 cases as of Wednesday. Of these, 132 cases have been confirmed as GBS.
The distribution of cases includes:
- 33 patients from Pune Municipal Corporation
- 86 from newly added villages in the PMC area
- 22 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation
- 21 from Pune Rural
- 8 from other districts
As reported by economictimes, currently, 62 patients have recovered and been discharged. However, 61 remain in intensive care units (ICUs), and 20 require ventilator support.
Understanding Guillain-Barre Syndrome
GBS is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system. This condition leads to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis. Early detection and medical intervention are critical in managing the disease and improving patient outcomes.
Steps to Prevent Further Spread
With the outbreak still unfolding, health officials emphasize the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions. Ensuring access to clean drinking water, maintaining hygiene, and reporting any symptoms early can help mitigate the risks associated with GBS.
