Fresh Case Detected, Total Reaches 211
Maharashtra’s tally of suspected and confirmed Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases increased to 211 on 18th Feb after officials detected a new case. Of these, 183 cases have been confirmed as the rare nerve disorder, according to state health officials.
Understanding Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)
GBS is a rare neurological condition where the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the arms and legs, and difficulties in swallowing or breathing. If not managed promptly, the condition can become life-threatening.
District-Wise Breakdown of Cases
Among the 211 reported cases:
- 42 cases are from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)
- 94 cases come from newly-added villages in the PMC area
- 32 cases are from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)
- 33 cases are reported from Pune’s rural areas
- 10 cases have been detected in other districts
Patient Recovery and ICU Admissions
So far, 139 patients have recovered and been discharged. However, 39 patients remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 18 are on ventilators, highlighting the severity of the outbreak.
Death Toll Reaches Nine
As reported by economictimes, the state health department confirmed that nine deaths have been linked to GBS. Of these, four were officially confirmed as GBS-related deaths, while five others are suspected cases pending further investigation.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge early diagnosis and treatment to improve patient outcomes.
