Health Minister Unveils ‘Patent Mitra’ to Boost Medical Innovations

At the third International Symposium on Health Technology Assessment (ISHTA 2025), held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, Union health minister Jagat Prakash Nadda announced the launch of the Patent Mitra initiative.

Organized by the Department of Health Research (DHR) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the event was conducted in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) India Country Office and the Centre for Global Development (CGD).

A Collaborative Effort to Strengthen Medical Patents

Under the guidance of NITI Aayog, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has partnered with the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) and received support from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

Together, they aim to create a robust ecosystem that fosters biomedical innovation. The Patent Mitra initiative provides comprehensive patent and technology transfer (TT) support at every stage of the patent lifecycle, helping innovators transform research into practical solutions that drive advancements in public health.

Empowering Researchers with Patent Protection and Technology Transfer

The Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative focuses on strategic and high-quality patent filings to protect innovative biomedical research. Its goal is to enhance patent protection and enable seamless technology transfer, ensuring that cutting-edge medical innovations reach society and make a meaningful impact.

“This platform is designed to provide crucial support to scientists, researchers, and institutions, ensuring their ground-breaking work is protected through patents and made accessible to the public through efficient technology transfer,” said Nadda.

Alignment with Med Tech Mitra and Key Resource Releases

Nadda emphasized that the Medical Education Patent Mitra initiative aligns with Med Tech Mitra, reflecting ICMR’s commitment to fostering medical innovation.

During the event, the Union Health Minister also launched several key resources, including:

*Open Real-Time PCR Kit for Pulmonary Tuberculosis Diagnosis (Quantiplus MTB FAST Detection Kit by Huwel Lifesciences)

*HTA Technologies Compendium

*HTA Costing Database
