IIT Madras’ CeRAI Partners with Roche Diagnostics
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) has joined forces with Roche Diagnostics International Ltd, Switzerland, to advance Research and Development (R&D) in AI-driven healthcare solutions.
Roche has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CeRAI. It has also become a Gold Consortium Member, strengthening its commitment to innovation in in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) and digital health solutions.
Advancing AI in In-Vitro Diagnostics
CeRAI and Roche will collaborate on AI-driven analytics and services for IVD diagnostics. This partnership aims to develop ethical, accountable, and transparent AI models that improve healthcare outcomes.
CeRAI, a virtual interdisciplinary research center at IIT Madras, focuses on both fundamental and applied research in Responsible AI. The center seeks to become India’s leading authority on AI guidelines and policies, ensuring AI models are accountable, explainable, and responsible.
Roche, a global leader in diagnostic solutions, develops innovative tests and systems that enhance disease diagnosis and monitoring worldwide. Their expertise in research and development enables them to create advanced healthcare solutions.
Insights from the IITM-CeRAI and Roche Symposium
On February 10, 2025, the IITM-CeRAI, Roche Symposium on Responsible AI in Healthcare was held at the IIT Madras campus.
Prof. Manu Santhanam is the Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research at IIT Madras. He emphasized the importance of translating research into real-world applications. He highlighted IIT Madras’ active collaboration with industry partners. This partnership helps scale up innovations, increasing patents and technology transfers.
Prof. B Ravindran, Head of CeRAI, underscored the need for close collaboration between AI scientists and healthcare experts. He noted that Roche has an active research program in ethical AI and data management. This makes them an ideal partner in developing robust AI systems for healthcare.
Manu Dev, Chapter Lead for IVD Analytics Product Domain at Roche Information Solutions (RIS), highlighted the significance of data in healthcare. He stated that the framework agreement with IIT Madras will drive research in AI and analytics for digital health solutions, ultimately enhancing decision-making for healthcare providers and patients.
Adarsh Srivastava, from the Data, Analytics, and Research division at Roche Information Solutions, stressed the critical role of AI ethics in ensuring patient safety, fairness, and transparency. He pointed out that the rapid adoption of AI in diagnostics must be guided by ethical principles to mitigate biases, enhance trust, and align AI systems with human values.
