In Memoriam: Dr. Rustom Soonawala, a Titan of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dr. Rustom P. Soonawala was a distinguished Indian obstetrician and gynecologist, renowned for his significant contributions to women’s health, family planning, and medical innovation. Born in 1929, he pursued an illustrious medical career that spanned several decades, earning him national and international recognition.

Education and Early Career: Dr. Soonawala completed his MD in 1956 at Wadia Maternity Hospital in Mumbai, where he later became a professor. His early work focused on advancing obstetric and gynecological care in India, laying the foundation for his future innovations.

Innovations in Family Planning: In the 1960s, Dr. Soonawala invented the polyethylene intrauterine device (IUD), known as the “Soonawala IUD,” which proved to be safer than previous contraceptive devices. This innovation significantly contributed to family planning efforts in India and earned him the prestigious Von Graffenberg Medal from the University of Kiel, West Germany, in 1984.

Advancements in Infertility Treatment: Dr. Soonawala was instrumental in introducing and advancing infertility treatments in India. He was among the first to perform laparoscopy and microsurgery in the country, helping numerous patients overcome gynecological issues and achieve successful pregnancies.

Professional Roles and Recognitions: Throughout his career, Dr. Soonawala held several esteemed positions, including:

  • Professor Emeritus at Wadia Maternity Hospital, Mumbai.
  • Founder President of the Indian Society of Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy since 1989.
  • Honorary Medical Director of the Family Planning Association of India.

In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the President of India in 1991. Additionally, he received the Giants International Award in 2000 for excellence in the medical field and the Dhanvantari Award in 2014.

Legacy and Personal Life: Dr. Soonawala was known for his dedication to patients from all walks of life, including celebrities and everyday individuals. His compassionate care and medical expertise earned him a reputation as one of India’s leading gynecologists. He continued to offer consultations until a few years before his passing on January 5, 2025, at the age of 95.

His legacy continues through his contributions to medical science and the countless lives he touched throughout his career.
