A 70-year-old man was successfully treated at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, for a nasal blockage due to a deviated nasal septum and chronic ear infections. The patient, referred to as Mr. Vyas (name changed), had previously undergone heart valve repair surgery in 2016 and presented in 2024 with symptoms including ear discharge, hearing loss, nasal blockage, breathlessness, sneezing, headache, and snoring.
Mr. Vyas underwent a minimally invasive procedure known as Endoscopic Cartilage Tympanoplasty. This surgery, performed in a single session, involved using cartilage from his nasal septum to repair his eardrum, eliminating the need for multiple anesthesia sessions. The procedure was carried out by Dr. Chandraveer Singh and Dr. Sheetal Radia, both Consultant Otorhinolaryngologists and Head & Neck Onco Surgeons at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road. They highlighted the advantages of this approach, including reduced operating time, minimal pain, and no visible scars.
Dr. Singh explained that the nasal septum was deviated and there was a perforation in the eardrum, confirmed through clinical examination, CT scan, and audiometry. Dr. Radia added that Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and deviated nasal septum can cause various symptoms, including tinnitus, sinusitis, headaches, and noisy breathing during sleep.
Post-surgery, Mr. Vyas is symptom-free and can breathe properly. The success of this procedure, supported by a study published in the Indian Journal of Otology in 2023 by Dr. Singh, shows that using nasal cartilage for eardrum repairs is effective with high success rates and minimal complications.
Mr. Vyas expressed gratitude to the doctors at Wockhardt Hospitals for their accurate diagnosis and treatment, helping him overcome breathlessness and regain his hearing.
