KIMS Kingsway Hospitals has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by performing Central India’s first robotic-assisted Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR) using the advanced da Vinci robotic surgical system. The successful procedure was carried out on a 55-year-old woman diagnosed with mitral valve stenosis, a condition that narrows the mitral valve and restricts blood flow between the heart’s left atrium and left ventricle.
Advanced Technology Enables Minimally Invasive Surgery
Led by Dr. Saurabh Varshney, Chief Cardiovascular Surgeon at KIMS Kingsway Hospitals, the surgical team opted for a robotic-assisted approach over traditional open-heart surgery. “Mitral valve replacement is typically performed via a midline incision that involves cutting through the breastbone,” explained Dr. Varshney. “However, by using robotic assistance, we accomplished the same outcome through minimal incisions, significantly reducing recovery time and avoiding visible scarring.”
Using the da Vinci platform, surgeons replaced the patient’s diseased mitral valve with a mechanical one. The procedure proceeded smoothly, without any complications.
Faster Recovery and Improved Patient Experience
Compared to conventional surgery, the robotic-assisted technique offered multiple benefits. These included reduced blood loss, minimal post-operative pain, early mobilization, and an overall quicker recovery. Remarkably, the patient began walking within hours of the surgery and was discharged just four days later.
Dr. Varshney emphasized the difference: “Traditional heart surgery requires extended ICU stays and lengthy rehabilitation. In contrast, our patient resumed household activities within a week and returned to her normal routine within two weeks—as if she had never undergone surgery.”
Pioneering Robotic Cardiac Surgery in Central India
As per the press release, this mitral valve replacement follows another historic achievement by Dr. Varshney and his team—they also successfully performed Central India’s first robotic-assisted Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery recently.
These achievements underscore KIMS Kingsway Hospitals’ commitment to pioneering robotic cardiac surgery in Central India. By bringing this technology to Nagpur, the hospital ensures that patients no longer need to travel to metro cities for specialized treatment.
Accessibility and Affordability for All
“Treatment in Nagpur is more affordable compared to bigger cities,” Dr. Varshney noted. “As robotic-assisted surgery becomes more common and widely accepted, we expect the costs to reduce further. This will make the advanced technique accessible to a broader segment of patients.”
Elevating Surgical Standards Through Innovation
According to Dr. Varshney, the da Vinci robotic system has significantly enhanced surgical precision. “From the moment I began using it, I saw a remarkable improvement in control and finesse. The risk of arterial damage is much lower, and the overall efficiency of the procedure has improved.”
With over 20 years of experience in cardiovascular surgery, Dr. Varshney firmly believes in embracing technological advancements. “Adopting cutting-edge tools like the da Vinci system helps us improve patient outcomes and set new benchmarks in cardiac care.”
Attracting Patients from Across the Region
As the first hospital in Central India to introduce a robotic cardiac surgery program, KIMS Kingsway Hospitals has witnessed an overwhelmingly positive response. Patients from nearby states such as Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, and even metro cities like Mumbai, are now choosing Nagpur for robotic cardiac procedures.
By combining world-class expertise with state-of-the-art technology, KIMS Kingsway Hospitals continues to redefine the future of cardiac surgery in India.
