In a remarkable medical feat, experts at Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai successfully treated a 13-year-old girl from Sangli, Maharashtra, for a rare and life-threatening pancreatic condition. Led by Dr. Rajeev Redkar, Pediatric Surgeon, along with a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr. Aniruddha Phadke (Gastroenterologist), Dr. Deepak Ugra (Pediatrician), Dr. Rahul Sheth (Interventional Radiologist), and Dr. Minhaj Sheikh (Pediatrician), the team managed the complex case using advanced minimally invasive techniques.
The patient, Aditi Kamble, was diagnosed with a pseudoaneurysm in the gastroduodenal artery within a pancreatic pseudocyst, compounded by pancreatitis and a dilated pancreatic duct with stones. The rare condition, found in approximately 1 in 10 million children with pancreatitis, caused severe abdominal pain and stunted growth due to compromised pancreatic function.
Aditi’s condition had worsened despite previous medical interventions. Upon admission to Lilavati Hospital, an abdominal CT scan confirmed the presence of the pseudocyst and leaking pseudoaneurysm. Using advanced angiographic techniques, Dr. Rahul Sheth performed a life-saving angiographic embolization procedure to coil and seal the aneurysm, stopping the bleeding and resolving the critical condition.
As per the press release, the hour-long procedure was a success, and Aditi was discharged a week later in stable condition. Follow-up evaluations confirmed the complete resolution of her pain and no recurrence of the aneurysm.
Dr. Rajeev Redkar highlighted the importance of timely intervention, stating, “This was a rare and critical condition, especially in children. Advanced angiographic techniques allowed us to treat the pseudoaneurysm effectively, ensuring the patient’s recovery without further complications.”
Dr. Niraj Uttamani, Chief Operating Officer at Lilavati Hospital, praised the team’s efforts, saying, “This case underscores our commitment to providing world-class care. Using the latest technology and a collaborative approach, we tackle even the rarest conditions. We’re proud to have saved this child’s life and given her a brighter future.”
This successful intervention highlights Lilavati Hospital’s dedication to leveraging expertise and innovation to manage complex pediatric cases and improve patient outcomes.
