State Launches Free Cancer Vaccination Program

Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar announced on 1st March that the state government will offer free cancer vaccination to girls aged 0-14. This initiative aims to combat the rising number of cancer cases across Maharashtra.

Increasing Cancer Cases Across Age Groups

As reported by economictimes, Abitkar highlighted the alarming rise in cancer cases in both rural and urban areas. Previously, cancer was primarily associated with certain addictions, but now it is affecting individuals of all age groups, including children. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Maharashtra government is taking proactive steps to address this growing health concern.

Government Secures Approval for Vaccination Drive

To implement this initiative, the state government sought approval from Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar. Abitkar confirmed that Pawar has agreed to roll out the free cancer vaccination program, reinforcing the government’s commitment to public health.

Precautionary Measures Against Bird Flu in Vidarbha

In addition to the cancer vaccination program, the Maharashtra government has taken preventive steps following the detection of bird flu in crows in Vidarbha. Abitkar reassured the public that no human infections have been confirmed.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. Although officials have detected bird flu in crows, they have not confirmed any cases in humans. We have sent a suspected patient’s sample to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for further testing. As a precaution, we have temporarily shut down chicken shops in the affected area,” Abitkar stated.

Warnings Amid Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) Outbreak

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar advised the public to avoid consuming undercooked chicken. The warning comes amid the ongoing Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in Pune. Speaking at an event marking the 75th anniversary of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), he addressed concerns about a possible link between the outbreak and chicken consumption.

Conclusion

By launching the free cancer vaccination program and implementing preventive measures against bird flu and GBS, the Maharashtra government is actively working to protect public health. These initiatives demonstrate the state’s commitment to tackling emerging health challenges and ensuring the well-being of its residents.
