Narayana Health Launches Affordable Insurance Product ‘Aditi’ to Address Surgical Care Gap in India

In response to the significant gap in surgical care in India, where 70 million surgeries are needed annually but only 20 million are performed, Narayana Health has introduced its first health insurance product, ‘Aditi’. The initiative, launched on July 1, aims to make essential surgeries like caesarean deliveries, laparotomies, and open fracture treatments accessible to a broader population.

Dr. Devi Shetty, chairman of Narayana Health, emphasized the urgent need for affordable healthcare solutions. “Currently, many people lack the means to undergo even basic surgical procedures. With Aditi, we hope to initiate a strategic shift in India where quality healthcare includes not only infrastructure and access to treatments for diseases like malaria, TB, and HIV but also necessary surgical procedures,” he stated during the product launch.

As reported by Deccan Herald, the pilot project for Aditi is being rolled out in Mysuru, Mandya, and Chamraj Nagar, with plans to expand to Bengaluru in the coming weeks. Dr. Shetty and his team plan to assess the pilot’s success before implementing the product nationwide.

Viren Prasad Shetty, vice-chairman of Narayana Hrudayalaya Ltd, described Aditi as an entry-level plan among three planned insurance products. “Aditi’s annual premium is set at Rs 10,000, covering a family of four, with the eldest member being 45 years old. The premium may vary depending on existing co-morbidities and the age of the insured,” he explained. The plan covers up to Rs 5 lakh in treatment costs and Rs 1 crore in surgical expenses, significantly lower than traditional insurance plans, which range from Rs 20,000 to Rs 48,000.

Ravi Viswanath, director of Narayana Health Insurance Ltd, highlighted the inclusive nature of Aditi. “Our goal is to offer health insurance to everyone, regardless of their medical conditions,” he said. Initially, elective procedures under Aditi will be limited to Narayana Health facilities, while emergency treatments can be availed anywhere.

Viren Prasad emphasized that Aditi prioritizes a smooth and efficient healthcare experience. “Unlike traditional plans, Aditi operates within the trusted Narayana Health network, ensuring minimal administrative hurdles and access to experienced doctors and advanced facilities. In other countries, what we offer is known as managed care rather than insurance,” he noted.
