NMC Establishes Committee to Combat Quackery

In response to the growing menace of quackery nationwide, the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has formed a six-member committee to develop procedural guidelines addressing the provisions outlined in the NMC Act concerning quackery.

Chaired by Dr. Yogendra Malik, a member of the Ethics and Medical Registration Board, the committee comprises Dr. Brahmdeep Sandhu, Dr. Anupama Goal, Dr. Santhil, Dr. Mahesh Kumar K, and Ms. Purnima Tudu, appointed as the Convener.

As per an office memorandum issued by the apex medical education regulator on June 3rd, the committee has been tasked with framing procedural guidelines pertaining to the provisions laid out under Section 34 of the NMC Act, 2019, addressing quackery.

Section 34 stipulates that individuals not registered in the State or National Register are unauthorized to sign medical or fitness certificates or provide expert evidence in legal proceedings related to medicine.

As reported by Medical Dialogues, tThe Act imposes penalties, including imprisonment for up to one year or a fine of up to five lakh rupees, or both, for contravening its provisions.
