Study Reveals High Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Corporate Employees
MediBuddy, India’s largest digital healthcare company, conducted a study highlighting significant nutrient deficiencies among corporate professionals aged 40–50. Analyzing data from approximately 4,400 individuals (3,338 men and 1,059 women), the study reveals an urgent need for targeted health interventions. Notably, men exhibited a higher prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency, emphasizing the need for preventive care strategies.
Men More Susceptible to Vitamin B12 Deficiency
The study found that 57.16% of men had insufficient or deficient levels of vitamin B12, compared to 49.9% of women. Since vitamin B12 is essential for neurological function and energy metabolism, these findings underscore the importance of dietary modifications and supplementation for overall well-being.
Key Factors Contributing to Deficiencies
Contrary to the assumption that urban professionals maintain a balanced diet, the study suggests that poor absorption, dietary habits, and lifestyle factors contribute to widespread deficiencies.
1. Poor Absorption
Even those consuming B12-rich foods may experience malabsorption issues due to:
- Reduced stomach acid production (common with age)
- Gastrointestinal disorders affecting nutrient absorption
- Long-term use of medications like antacids and metformin
- Gut microbiome imbalance, leading to poor nutrient uptake
2. Dietary Habits & Vegetarian Diets
Vegetarians and vegans face a higher risk of B12 deficiency since the vitamin is naturally present in animal-based foods such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. Even those who consume dairy and eggs may struggle to meet daily B12 requirements without fortified foods or supplements.
3. High-Stress Lifestyles & Metabolic Strain
Corporate professionals often experience erratic eating patterns, high stress levels, alcohol consumption, and nicotine use, all of which can further deplete vitamin B12. A sedentary lifestyle combined with metabolic stress exacerbates the issue, making supplementation and regular health checkups crucial.
Expert Insights on Preventive Healthcare
Dr. Gowri Kulkarni, Head of Medical Operations at MediBuddy, emphasized the need for early intervention. She stated, “Preventive care is the cornerstone of long-term health. These findings highlight the importance of proactive healthcare, especially for employees in high-pressure corporate environments. At MediBuddy, we are committed to providing accessible healthcare solutions that encourage wellness through digital health tracking, timely screenings, and expert-led guidance. Our goal is to shift healthcare from reactive to preventive, ensuring better long-term health outcomes.”
Personalized Health Screenings: A Crucial Step Forward
As India’s corporate sector continues to expand, the findings reinforce the need for personalized health assessments beyond standard medical checkups. Regular screenings focusing on nutritional deficiencies and metabolic markers can help detect potential health risks before they become severe. Since men are often less likely to seek preventive care, targeted initiatives can encourage them to prioritize their health.
By raising awareness and integrating preventive healthcare strategies, companies and individuals can work together to improve overall well-being in the corporate sector.
