Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s dedication to advancing global health initiatives while extending support to World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, whom he fondly referred to as “Tulsi Bhai.”
PM Modi’s remarks came in response to Dr. Ghebreyesus’ message on X, thanking him and other leaders for their contributions during the inaugural WHO Investment Round, held in Brazil.
“Dear Tulsi Bhai, a healthy planet is a better planet. India is actively working in this sector,” PM Modi wrote on X. He emphasized the importance of integrating technology into health initiatives and pledged India’s commitment to strengthening global efforts in this area, as reported by IANS.
The WHO’s first-ever Investment Round was conducted during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, aiming to raise funds to support the organisation’s global health strategy. The event, attended by global leaders, including PM Modi, successfully garnered $1.7 billion in pledges.
As reported by medicaldialogues, the G20 leaders issued a declaration reaffirming their commitment to creating a fairer and more sustainable world, emphasizing the fight against inequalities and endorsing the WHO’s pivotal role in global health governance. They highlighted the importance of stable, transparent financing and supported the WHO Investment Round as a mechanism to secure additional resources for its initiatives.
“Investment in @WHO is an investment in global health security,” Dr. Ghebreyesus stated on X.
The WHO revealed that it has raised $3.8 billion of its $7.1 billion goal for the 14th General Programme of Work, which is projected to save 40 million additional lives over the next four years.
