State epidemiologist Dr. Utkarsh Betodkar reassured the public on Monday that there is no cause for alarm regarding human metapneumovirus (HMPV), emphasizing that its symptoms are similar to those of influenza and common viral flu.
Dr. Betodkar highlighted that the virus, which has garnered attention following an outbreak in China, has been known globally since 2001.
“This virus is prevalent worldwide, not just in China. It is more common during winter and affects vulnerable groups such as children under five, adults over 60, and individuals with weakened immune systems,” he said.
Enhanced Surveillance and Precautions
The Directorate of Health Services will intensify surveillance of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and influenza-like illnesses (ILI) to monitor potential cases. Dr. Betodkar advised against self-medication for cold or flu symptoms, urging individuals to seek proper medical consultation instead.
He clarified that there is no need for the general population to wear masks. “Only flu patients should wear masks to prevent spreading the infection. Healthcare workers and individuals with co-morbid conditions should wear masks in crowded areas, as a precaution not limited to HMPV,” he added.
No Fatal Cases in India
Dr. Betodkar confirmed that India has not reported any fatal cases of HMPV. In the event of suspected cases in Goa, samples will be sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for confirmation.
Meanwhile, Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane stated that the state has not yet received any directives regarding HMPV. However, the health department is prepared to implement guidelines when issued.
As reported by economictimes, the announcement comes amid growing global awareness of HMPV, with health authorities emphasizing preparedness and preventive measures.
