President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the International Conference on Innovation in Unani Medicine for Integrative Health Solutions – A Way Forward in New Delhi on February 11, 2025, marking the celebration of Unani Day.

Honoring Hakim Ajmal Khan’s Legacy

During her address, President Murmu highlighted that Unani Day commemorates Hakim Ajmal Khan, a pioneer who significantly expanded and modernized the Unani system of medicine in India. She praised his contributions to innovation in Unani medicine, which led to its widespread acceptance across the country.

India’s Leadership in Unani Medicine

President Murmu emphasized that India is at the forefront of education, research, healthcare, and the production of Unani medicines. She expressed her appreciation for researchers and practitioners who are integrating modern scientific methods and technology into Unani healthcare.

She also voiced her optimism that the conference would explore key contemporary topics, including:

A Holistic Approach to Healthcare

As reported by pib.gov.in, the President reaffirmed India’s commitment to a holistic healthcare system, where all medical disciplines receive equal recognition. She noted that the National Health Policy 2017 emphasizes integrating AYUSH medical systems, including Unani, into mainstream healthcare.

Strengthening Unani Medical Education and Research

Under the guidance of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine, several Unani medical institutions are actively conducting studies and research. The introduction of MD and PhD programs in Unani Medical Colleges marks a significant step toward advancing the field.

President Murmu expressed confidence that future generations of Unani medical professionals will uphold India’s rich heritage of traditional medicine. She believes they will expand upon this legacy, ensuring its continued growth and relevance.
