As Delhi battles severe air pollution, the Pulmonology Department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has reported a significant influx of patients with respiratory issues, a doctor stated on Thursday.

As reported by Economic times, visuals showed numerous patients visiting the OPD of the Pulmonology Department at AIIMS.

Dr. Karan Madan, Associate Professor in the Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at AIIMS, told ANI, “We are observing that many patients are facing considerable difficulties, particularly those with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD. There has been a noticeable increase in the number of patients visiting the OPD, with many reporting worsening asthma symptoms.”

He further noted that some patients with severe symptoms required hospitalization.

“Several patients have presented with severe exacerbations, which refer to a significant worsening of their symptoms, and many have needed hospital admission. It is indeed a challenging time for individuals with respiratory conditions,” Dr. Madan said.

Dr. Madan advised patients with respiratory problems to stay indoors and limit outdoor activities.

“We have observed approximately a 15 to 20 percent increase in the number of patients experiencing worsening respiratory issues, particularly those with pre-existing asthma. We are seeing more cases of asthma exacerbations. It is crucial for individuals with respiratory problems to avoid outdoor exposure,” he emphasized.

“For those who wish to exercise, it is better to do so indoors to minimize exposure to air pollution. Asthma patients should also ensure they are taking their inhalers as prescribed,” Dr. Madan added. (ANI)
