Father of Laproscopic Surgery Dr. Udwadia passes away

The father of Laparoscopic surgery in India, Dr. Tehemton E Udwadia, aged 88 passed away in Mumbai at Breach Candy Hospital on 7th January 2023 after a long illness.

Dr. Tehemton E Udwadia, an Indian surgeon and gastroenterologist at two Mumbai hospitals, Breach Candy Hospital and Hinduja Hospital was the founder and president of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons. He presided over the association from 1993 to 1998.

He has served as the president of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India, the Association of Surgeons of India, and the Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia. He has been the president of the Indian chapter and the World body of the International College of Surgeons. Publishing over 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Udwadia is also the author of two books, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy and Laparoscopic Surgery in Developing Countries.

The Government of India awarded Dr. Udwadia the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri, in 2006 and the third highest civilian honor of the Padma Bhushan in 2017 for his contributions to Indian medicine.
