Woman Having Cerebrospinal Fluid Treated at Wockhardt Hospitals

A team consisting of Dr.ChandraVeer Singh, Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist and Head & Neck Onco Surgeon, Dr. Sheetal Radia, Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist, and Head & Neck Onco Surgeon and Dr. Aswin Borkar, Consultant Neurosurgeon successfully performed Endoscopic Skull Surgery on a 63-year-old woman detected with CSF rhinorrhoea causing continuous abnormal nasal watery discharge and bouts of fever.

The patient Mrs. Khan, a housewife and a resident of Mira Road was detected with kidney problems and living with one kidney for the past 2 years. To her dismay, she experienced a headache, watery nasal discharge, and bouts of fever since 2021, which interfered with her normal routine. She consulted doctors at various hospitals and medicos who failed to make the correct diagnosis and treatment for her cold and rhinitis.  However, the patient was referred to Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road wherein she was promptly treated to avoid any further complications.

CT Cisternogram was done on arrival. Cerebrospinal fluid leak (CSF) is when the fluid surrounding your brain and spinal cord leaks in the nose. This is known as (CSF) rhinorrhoea and is seen in people of all age groups. CSF fluid leaking into the nose is a rare condition. It happens due to trauma over the skull. Not treating her at the right time would have led to complications like meningitis, and brain abscess.

Dr. ChandraVeer added, “Earlier, the Neurosurgeon used to cut the skull bone and repair the leak in “Endoscopic C.S.F. repair surgery. However, with the help of the latest treatment, her surgery was done endoscopically and the flap was taken from the nose to repair the CSF fluid leak into the nose from the brain.  The surgery was uneventful and lasted for 2 hours.
