47-Year-Old Lifeguard Gets a Lifeline After 95% Heart Blockage

Press Release

A 47-year-old lifeguard from Vashigaon, who helps save lives, received timely cardiac care himself after doctors at NewEra Hospital, Navi Mumbai, detected a critical 95% blockage in the right coronary artery at the site of a stent placed three years ago.

The patient, Mr. Rajaram Joshi, has a history of diabetes, hypertension and ischemic heart disease. He had experienced intermittent chest discomfort for eight days, which later worsened and was accompanied by sweating and breathlessness. He subsequently sought emergency medical care.

Critical Blockage Detected

Given his cardiac history and worsening symptoms, doctors immediately conducted an evaluation. His ECG showed fresh changes, while his blood pressure was recorded at 195/120 mmHg. Coronary angiography subsequently revealed a severe 95% narrowing at the previous stent site.

As per the NewEra Hospitals press release, Dr. Gaurav Surana, Consultant Cardiologist, said patients with a history of angioplasty should not ignore new or worsening chest pain, particularly when it occurs with sweating or breathlessness.

He added that uncontrolled blood pressure and cholesterol, along with diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors, can contribute to recurrent narrowing in previously treated arteries.

Repeat Angioplasty Restores Blood Flow

Doctors performed repeat angioplasty during the same sitting and placed a drug-eluting stent to reopen the severely narrowed segment. The procedure took about 30 minutes and successfully restored blood flow.

The patient was then monitored in the ICU before being shifted to the ward after his condition stabilised. Following a further 24 hours of observation, he was discharged in stable and symptom-free condition. Doctors also adjusted his blood pressure medication based on ICU monitoring and advised him to rest for 15 days before resuming daily activities.

Importance of Long-Term Heart Care

Dr. Surana advised the patient to continue his prescribed medicines and maintain good control of his diabetes and blood pressure, along with a balanced diet.

He also stressed that angioplasty treats a blockage but does not eliminate the underlying risk of heart disease. Therefore, patients should promptly seek medical attention for any new or recurring chest discomfort rather than dismissing it as acidity or routine fatigue.
