Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, successfully performed complex reconstructive surgery on a one-year-old child with left primary obstructive megaureter, a rare congenital urinary tract condition that can damage kidney function if left untreated.
Timely Diagnosis Reveals the Underlying Condition
The child was admitted with a month-long history of recurrent fever, loose stools and reduced urine output. After a detailed evaluation, doctors diagnosed a rare blockage in the tube carrying urine from the left kidney to the bladder. The ureter had become abnormally enlarged and was blocked where it connected to the bladder, causing urine to accumulate in the kidney and increasing the risk of infection and kidney damage.
Reconstructive Surgery Clears the Blockage
The urology team, led by Dr. Anup Gulati, Director – Urology, performed minimally invasive laparoscopic reconstructive surgery to reshape and reimplant the enlarged ureter into the bladder. The surgeons also placed a temporary stent to keep the passage open during healing.
