At its 8th Standing Academic Committee meeting, AIIMS Gorakhpur approved several new academic programmes aimed at expanding advanced medical training, strengthening research, and addressing emerging healthcare needs. The decision marks a significant milestone in the institute’s academic growth.
Expansion of Super-Specialty Courses
The committee granted approval for multiple DM (Doctorate of Medicine) programmes, including:
- DM in Neurology
- DM in Pain Medicine
- DM in Clinical Pharmacology
- DM in Critical Care Medicine (under the Department of Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine & Critical Care)
In addition, Post-Doctoral Certificate Courses (PDCCs) were introduced in:
- Trauma Anaesthesia
- Spine Trauma
- Pelvic-Acetabular Surgery
- Adolescent Gynaecology
Several of these courses, including the PDCC in Adolescent Gynaecology, are the first of their kind in India. A Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Maternal-Foetal Medicine under the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology also received approval.
Strengthening Academic and Nursing Education
To further broaden its academic spectrum, AIIMS Gorakhpur sanctioned:
- MS in Trauma Surgery
- PhD in Nursing
- MSc in Nursing Psychology
- BSc in Operation Theatre Technology
These courses are designed to build a skilled healthcare workforce equipped to address both clinical and psychological aspects of patient care.
Addressing Mental Health Challenges
During the discussions, Dr. Ashoka Jahnavi Prasad, Executive Director of AIIMS Gorakhpur, drew attention to the rising cases of student suicides across educational institutions. He stressed the urgent need for sustained psychological support and preventive interventions within academic settings.
As reported by TOI, he emphasized that launching dedicated courses such as the MSc in Nursing Psychology will not only expand the mental health workforce but also ensure improved access to psychological care for students and the wider community.
