Amaravati, September 2025 – Andhra Pradesh has significantly strengthened its healthcare system with the approval of the new universal health insurance scheme, which will now cover 324 medical services at government-run hospitals — up from the existing 169.

Major Expansion of Services in Government Hospitals

Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav announced that the inclusion of 155 new services will greatly expand the scope of treatment available to citizens.

“This will strengthen the role of government hospitals across the state,” Yadav said.

In addition, 197 medical services provided under the Dr NTR Vaidya Seva Trust scheme, which are rarely availed by beneficiaries, will now be offered free of cost under the new health insurance policy.

Rationalisation of Services Under New Policy

Criticising the previous YSRCP government, Yadav pointed out that it had inflated the number of procedures under the Aarogyasri scheme by listing similar treatments separately with the same package value, taking the count to 3,257.

Under the new health policy:

  • The government allocated 324 services to government hospitals.

  • The Dr NTR Vaidya Seva Trust will offer 197 rarely used services free of cost.

  • Authorities consolidated and regularised the remaining procedures into 2,550 services.

“Payments for these 2,550 services will be made through the insurance company selected for the new scheme. In this way, all 3,257 medical services currently provided to people will be available under the new insurance scheme,” Yadav added.

Coverage for 1.63 Crore Families

As reported by TOI, the hybrid scheme will provide insurance coverage of ₹2.5 lakh per year to 1.63 crore beneficiary families under the health insurance for all scheme.

For the first time, 20 lakh above poverty line (APL) families will also be included.

  • Treatment costs up to ₹2.5 lakh will be covered by the insurance company
  • Costs between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹25 lakh for 1.43 crore families will be borne by the Dr NTR Medical Trust

Strengthening Healthcare Access

The initiative provides universal health coverage, strengthens government hospital infrastructure, and extends financial protection to more families, including those previously excluded. The hybrid model aims to provide affordable, equitable, and comprehensive healthcare access to all sections of society.
