The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed taking over the operations of the state-run Aarey Hospital in Goregaon for the next 30 years. Through this move, the civic body aims to strengthen healthcare services, particularly for tribal communities and residents living in the Aarey region.
Under the proposal, the Maharashtra government will hand over the existing hospital building and staff quarters to the BMC free of cost. In return, the civic body will take full responsibility for the hospital’s operations, maintenance, utility bills, taxes, licences, and other associated liabilities throughout the agreement period.
Hospital Upgrade Without Major Construction
According to the proposal, the hospital building covers 1,257.90 square metres, while the adjoining staff quarters span 674.30 square metres. Since the required infrastructure already exists, the BMC plans to enhance healthcare services through repairs and essential upgrades rather than undertaking major construction work.
As per a report by Hindustan Times, the BMC had earlier informed the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission that most administrative formalities for the transfer had already been completed, with approval from the civic body’s improvement committee being the final step.
Focus on Affordable Healthcare
The BMC intends to provide affordable medical services to economically weaker sections while continuing healthcare facilities for employees of the Dairy Development Department and workers associated with the Aarey Dairy Colony. However, ownership of the property will remain with the state government, and the hospital premises will be returned after the 30-year management period ends.
Environmental Clearances Still Required
Because the hospital is located within the eco-sensitive zone surrounding Sanjay Gandhi National Park, any future redevelopment or structural modifications will require approval from the relevant environmental authorities.
Committee Seeks Modifications
Although the improvement committee discussed the proposal, it referred the matter back to the BMC administration for necessary modifications. Once the committee grants its approval, the civic body will be able to begin upgrading healthcare services in one of Mumbai’s underserved regions.
