Emcure Pharmaceuticals Launches Poviztra® Semaglutide Injection in India

Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (BSE: 544210, NSE: EMCURE) has announced the commercial launch of Poviztra®, a semaglutide injection, across India. With this milestone, Emcure becomes the first Indian company to exclusively distribute and commercialise Poviztra®, the second brand of Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide injection for weight management in the country.

Once-Weekly Dosing with Advanced Pen Technology

Poviztra® is available in a convenient once-weekly pen device in five strengths—0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.7 mg, and a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg. Priced from ₹8,790 per month for four weekly doses, the product features a state-of-the-art pen that enables simple administration with precise and accurate dosing, thereby enhancing patient convenience and adherence.

Strong Clinical Evidence and Global Experience

Importantly, Poviztra® is supported by extensive clinical evidence from the STEP and SELECT clinical trial programmes, along with robust real-world usage data. Globally, semaglutide has been available for nearly a decade and accounts for approximately 38 million patient-years of exposure. This extensive experience reinforces its strong safety and efficacy profile, which is backed by comprehensive clinical data.

Indications for Weight Management and Cardiovascular Risk Reduction

Poviztra® is indicated as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or 27 kg/m² or higher in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbidity such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, or dyslipidaemia. In addition, the therapy is indicated to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events—including cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and non-fatal stroke—in adults with established cardiovascular disease and either obesity or overweight. Notably, clinical trials have demonstrated weight loss of more than 20% in many patients receiving semaglutide.

Leadership Highlights the Need for Equitable Access

As per the press release, commenting on the launch, Satish Mehta, CEO and Managing Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd., highlighted India’s growing obesity burden. He noted that nearly 254 million people in the country live with generalised obesity, while another 351 million experience abdominal obesity. Against this backdrop, he stated that the launch of Poviztra® represents a significant step toward expanding equitable access to scientifically validated weight-management therapies. Through Emcure’s strong distribution network and pan-India reach, he added, the company aims to ensure that more patients can benefit from advanced treatments such as semaglutide.
