A 22-year-old woman from Delhi has regained access to sound and significantly reduced her dependence on lip-reading after undergoing successful bilateral cochlear implant surgery. Born with profound hearing loss in both ears, Tina Garg faced communication challenges from an early age. However, she remained determined to pursue her goals and excel academically.
After doctors diagnosed her condition, Tina’s family relocated to Chennai to ensure she received specialised support and early intervention. There, she attended a school for children with hearing disabilities and developed strong lip-reading skills, which became central to her communication and learning journey.
Academic Excellence Despite Hearing Impairment
Over the years, Tina overcame several obstacles and continued to perform exceptionally well in her studies. Her perseverance eventually earned her admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for undergraduate education.
Nevertheless, daily interactions in academic and social settings remained demanding. Since she relied heavily on lip-reading, every conversation required intense concentration and effort.
Exploring a New Path Through Cochlear Implant Surgery
While looking for treatment options, Tina consulted Dr. Sumit Mrig, Director and Unit Head of ENT and Cochlear Implant Surgery at a private hospital in Delhi. Following a detailed evaluation, she decided to undergo bilateral cochlear implant surgery.
The procedure involved implanting electronic devices that stimulate the auditory nerve and provide the sensation of sound. After the surgery, Tina participated in a structured six-month auditory rehabilitation programme designed to help her recognise and interpret sounds more effectively.
As per the DD News, the combination of advanced cochlear implant technology and dedicated rehabilitation support can significantly improve communication abilities and overall quality of life for individuals with profound hearing loss.
Rehabilitation Boosts Confidence and Communication
Following rehabilitation, Tina experienced a remarkable improvement in her ability to communicate and navigate everyday situations. As a result, she became less dependent on lip-reading and gained greater confidence in academic, professional and social environments.
According to Dr. Mrig, profound hearing loss can affect communication, education, confidence and social participation. He noted that bilateral cochlear implantation, when combined with rehabilitation and long-term support, can help individuals interact more effectively with the world around them and lead more independent lives.
Another Milestone: Admission to IIM Bangalore
Tina’s achievements did not stop with her medical recovery. Building on her academic success, she later secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, marking another significant milestone in her journey.
Reflecting on her experience, Tina credited her family, teachers and healthcare professionals for supporting her at every stage. She described her journey as a powerful example of perseverance, informed decision-making and the importance of a strong support system.
An Inspiring Story of Determination
Tina’s journey highlights how timely medical intervention, technological advancements and sustained rehabilitation can transform lives. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating that determination and the right support can help individuals overcome challenges and achieve extraordinary success.
