Godavari Biorefineries Limited bagged a patent from the Japan Patent Office for its breakthrough invention, “5-Hydroxy-1,4-Naphthalenedione for Use in the Treatment of Cancer.” The patent strengthens the company’s global intellectual property portfolio and reinforces its growing presence in oncology research.
Patent Covers Cancer and Cancer Stem Cell Treatment
The newly granted Japanese patent protects a novel class of compounds that shows strong inhibitory activity against both conventional cancer cells and cancer stem cells. These stem cells are often associated with tumor recurrence, treatment resistance, and disease progression. Importantly, preclinical studies have demonstrated significant efficacy against several aggressive cancers, including breast cancer and prostate cancer. As a result, the patent expands the company’s opportunities to develop advanced cancer therapies targeting difficult-to-treat malignancies.
Global Intellectual Property Footprint Expands
With this approval, Godavari Biorefineries Limited now holds patent protection for the molecule in multiple major jurisdictions, including China, Spain, United Kingdom, Several member states of the European Union and Japan. Notably, Japan is the world’s third-largest pharmaceutical market and maintains some of the most rigorous intellectual property standards globally. Therefore, securing patent protection in Japan represents a significant milestone for the company’s oncology program.
Leadership Highlights Science-Driven Innovation
“We have always believed that our role is to use science to create a better world. Whether it is improving the health of our soil, supporting agriculture, advancing sustainable materials or discovering molecules that could shape the future of human health, the purpose remains the same. Every patent we secure reflects the quality of our scientific research and strengthens our ability to build original molecules that can make a meaningful difference to society,” said Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director, Godavari Biorefineries Limited.
Clinical Development and Future Outlook
In addition to expanding its patent portfolio, the company is actively developing novel cancer therapies. Its lead molecule is currently undergoing clinical trials, while research efforts continue to focus on translating laboratory discoveries into potential therapeutic solutions. Furthermore, the company aims to address critical unmet medical needs through translational research that bridges scientific innovation and patient care.
