ICMR Establishes High-Altitude Medicine Research Centre in Himachal Pradesh

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) laid the foundation stone for the ICMR Centre for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research (ICMR-CHAMP) in Keylong, Lahaul and Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh. The centre aims to strengthen research into high-altitude health challenges and improve healthcare for Armed Forces personnel and Himalayan communities.

About ICMR-CHAMP

Building on an ICMR field station established in Keylong nearly a decade ago, the new centre will operate as a permanent, year-round research institution. It will feature advanced laboratories and specialised personnel to support scientific studies and develop practical healthcare solutions for high-altitude environments.

Key Research Areas

The centre will investigate how low oxygen levels, extreme cold, changing climatic conditions and the distinctive lifestyles of Himalayan tribal communities affect human health. Through this research, scientists aim to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of altitude-related illnesses.

Collaboration with Leading Institutions

ICMR-CHAMP will bring together expertise from the ICMR, Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), AIIMS Bilaspur and other research institutions. Furthermore, the centre will encourage community participation to ensure that research addresses the specific healthcare needs of people living in high-altitude regions.

Supporting Armed Forces Personnel

The centre will play a vital role in improving healthcare for Armed Forces personnel deployed in challenging high-altitude environments. Its research will help develop better acclimatisation strategies, early detection methods and treatment protocols to reduce altitude-related health risks.

Improving Healthcare for Himalayan Communities

In addition to supporting military personnel, the centre will address key public health concerns among Himalayan communities. Its research will cover maternal and newborn health, child growth, nutrition and regional disease patterns, helping healthcare professionals develop more effective and locally relevant interventions.

Leveraging Technology for Remote Healthcare

The centre will also explore innovative healthcare solutions, including drone-enabled medicine delivery, digital health systems and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These technologies could improve access to essential medicines, strengthen healthcare delivery and support timely medical interventions in remote and difficult-to-reach areas. As reported by drishtiias.com, by combining advanced medical research, institutional collaboration and emerging technologies, ICMR-CHAMP aims to strengthen high-altitude medicine and improve public health outcomes across the Himalayan region.
