The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has inaugurated the Ashok Soota Molecular Medicine Facility at its Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering (BSBE). This initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening advanced biomedical research infrastructure in alignment with national healthcare priorities and global scientific progress.
Inauguration Ceremony and Leadership Presence
Ashok Soota, a distinguished alumnus of IIT Roorkee, inaugurated the facility in the presence of K. K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, along with faculty members, researchers, and industry representatives. The event highlighted the institute’s commitment to fostering innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
An Integrated Platform for Translational Research
Designed as a state-of-the-art integrated platform, the facility will support drug discovery, biomolecular research, and the development of next-generation diagnostic tools.
Importantly, it enables researchers to progress seamlessly from understanding disease mechanisms and identifying biomolecular targets to validating lead molecules and developing assays. By integrating expertise across protein science, molecular and cell biology, structural biology, biophysics, analytical profiling, and advanced imaging, the facility will drive high-impact research.
Furthermore, it will focus on critical disease areas such as cancer, neurological disorders, metabolic diseases, and infectious diseases.
Advanced Instrumentation and Capabilities
As per the press release, the facility houses cutting-edge instrumentation that supports end-to-end workflows in molecular characterisation and translational research. These include automated protein purification systems, HPLC and UPLC systems, GC-MS, isothermal calorimetry, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), protein crystallisation robotics, and other high-precision analytical platforms.
As a result, IIT Roorkee significantly enhances its capabilities in molecular diagnostics, structural validation, biomolecular interaction studies, and advanced assay development.
Leadership Perspective on Research Growth
Addressing the gathering, Prof. K. K. Pant emphasised that the facility strengthens the institute’s research ecosystem in biosciences and bioengineering. He noted that integrating advanced infrastructure with interdisciplinary expertise will accelerate translational research and contribute to healthcare innovation, precision medicine, and scientific self-reliance.
Vision for Innovation and Societal Impact
Ashok Soota highlighted the importance of building strong research ecosystems that translate scientific discoveries into societal impact. He stressed that while India has immense scientific talent, it must also invest in world-class infrastructure and collaborative platforms to drive innovation at scale.
He further expressed pride in IIT Roorkee’s growing capabilities in molecular diagnostics, precision medicine, and drug discovery.
Fostering Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Research
Pravindra Kumar, Head of the Institute Instrumentation Center and Ashok Soota Institute Chair Professor, stated that the facility will serve as a collaborative platform for faculty, researchers, and industry partners.
Consequently, it will strengthen shared research infrastructure and enable globally competitive, interdisciplinary work in molecular medicine and translational biosciences.
Conclusion:
With this initiative, IIT Roorkee reinforces its commitment to advancing interdisciplinary research and fostering industry collaboration. Ultimately, the Ashok Soota Molecular Medicine Facility will play a pivotal role in driving innovation-led solutions for national and global healthcare challenges.
