To strengthen clinical oversight and improve the quality of dialysis care across the State, Karnataka has introduced an AI-based smart monitoring system in seven dialysis centres operating under the government’s public-private partnership (PPP) model. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao officially launched the system at KC General Hospital on Thursday.

The initiative aims to enhance patient safety, clinical monitoring, and operational transparency in government-supported dialysis facilities.

AI Technology Enhances Monitoring in Dialysis Centres

As reported by The Hindu, the AI-enabled monitoring platform, introduced by NephroPlus, integrates advanced surveillance and data analytics technologies into dialysis centres operating under the State’s PPP programme. Through this integration, the system strengthens clinical supervision while promoting standardized care practices across facilities.

Moreover, the platform provides healthcare teams with improved tools to monitor treatment procedures, maintain quality standards, and ensure patient safety during dialysis sessions.

Real-Time Tracking of Critical Dialysis Parameters

One of the key advantages of the system is its ability to track dialysis parameters in real time. It continuously monitors important indicators such as blood pressure, fluid removal levels, and electrolyte balance.

As a result, healthcare professionals can closely observe patient conditions during dialysis treatment and respond promptly to any abnormalities or sudden changes. This real-time oversight significantly reduces the risk of complications and improves treatment outcomes.

Monitoring 28 Key Quality and Safety Indicators

In addition to clinical parameters, the platform evaluates 28 key operational and clinical indicators. These include:

  • Adherence to dialysis protocols
  • Patient safety measures
  • Bed availability
  • Staff alertness
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Infection control practices
  • Hygiene and sanitation standards
  • Security compliance
  • Overall operational efficiency

By monitoring these indicators continuously, the system helps maintain consistent quality standards across dialysis centres.

Digital Governance Through AI-Driven Oversight

Furthermore, the new platform introduces a digital governance framework for dialysis services. Instead of relying on periodic manual audits, the system enables continuous AI-driven monitoring of clinical and operational activities.

It also supports automated tracking of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and promotes data-driven decision-making for both clinical management and operational planning. Consequently, healthcare administrators can ensure greater transparency, accountability, and consistency in dialysis service delivery.

High Accuracy with Scope for Further Improvement

Currently, the AI monitoring system operates with an accuracy level of 85% to 95%. Officials expect ongoing technological refinements to further enhance its analytical performance and predictive capabilities, allowing healthcare teams to identify potential issues even earlier.

Government Emphasises Innovation in Public Healthcare

Speaking at the launch event, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao highlighted the State government’s commitment to expanding dialysis access through innovative solutions.

“Karnataka has been committed to expanding access to dialysis services through the PPP model. The introduction of AI-enabled monitoring systems further strengthens this effort by improving clinical oversight and enhancing patient safety,” the Minister said.

He further added that collaborations between the government and private partners can significantly improve healthcare standards.

“It is encouraging to see how innovation and partnerships can work together to ensure that dialysis services delivered under the PPP programme match, and even exceed, private sector standards,” he noted.

Live Demonstration Showcases AI Dashboards

During the launch event, officials conducted a live demonstration of the AI-powered monitoring dashboards. The demonstration highlighted how the system tracks dialysis procedures and quality indicators in real time, offering healthcare teams immediate insights into patient care and operational performance.

With the adoption of this AI-driven monitoring system, Karnataka aims to further strengthen its dialysis programme while ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality treatment for patients across the State.
