In a highly unusual case, a 12-year-old girl from the Nandyal region was diagnosed with a rare adrenal gland tumor—typically seen in adults aged 30 to 50. Doctors at KIMS Cuddles, Kurnool, led by Consultant Pediatric & Neonatal Surgeon and Pediatric Urologist Dr. Sai Prasuna, successfully treated the young patient.
Unusual Symptoms Lead to Diagnosis
The school-going girl initially experienced severe headaches, prompting her parents to consult a paediatrician. During the examination, doctors discovered that her blood pressure was significantly higher than normal—an abnormal finding for a child and more commonly seen in adults. As her symptoms persisted, a CT scan was performed, which revealed inflammation in the adrenal gland. Consequently, she was referred to KIMS Cuddles Hospital for advanced care.
Confirming a Rare Tumor: Pheochromocytoma
Upon evaluation at KIMS Cuddles, doctors identified the tumor as pheochromocytoma, an extremely rare condition in children. The tumor triggers excessive production of catecholamines (hormones), resulting in dangerously high blood pressure. If left untreated, it can lead to severe, potentially life-threatening complications. Therefore, the medical team decided to proceed with surgical removal.
Stabilizing Blood Pressure Before Surgery
Before the operation, doctors focused on bringing the girl’s elevated blood pressure under control. Once her levels stabilized, the team successfully removed the tumor through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. This approach ensured faster recovery, less pain, and reduced complications.
Early Detection Enables Complete Recovery
Such tumors are exceptionally rare, especially at such a young age. Fortunately, the condition was detected early, allowing timely medical intervention and complete removal of the tumor. However, as Dr. Sai Prasuna emphasized, the child may face future risks related to high blood pressure. Therefore, regular monitoring and follow-up check-ups will be essential to safeguard her long-term heart health.
