KIMS Hospitals, Thane has become the first hospital in the Thane suburban region to offer comprehensive treatment for advanced Parkinson’s disease, including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery. Through its Advanced Epilepsy & Parkinson’s Centre, the hospital is demonstrating how timely diagnosis and access to cutting-edge therapies can significantly improve patient quality of life.

Deep Brain Stimulation: A Breakthrough for Advanced Parkinson’s Disease

Deep Brain Stimulation is a globally accepted, highly specialised treatment for patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease who no longer respond adequately to medications. By offering DBS locally, KIMS Hospitals, Thane has bridged a critical care gap for patients who earlier had to travel long distances for such advanced neurological treatment.

Remarkable Patient Recovery Highlights Clinical Impact

A 65-year-old Malad-based woman diagnosed with advanced Parkinson’s disease showed dramatic improvement after undergoing DBS surgery at KIMS Hospitals, Thane. Prior to surgery, she experienced severe tremors, stiffness, and slowness of movement. Medications provided relief for only a few hours, leaving her with prolonged “off periods” during the day. As a result, she depended heavily on others for daily activities and struggled with medication-related side effects.

Following a detailed multidisciplinary evaluation, doctors recommended DBS surgery. The procedure was successful, and the patient was discharged within five days. Within a month, her symptoms improved significantly. Her off periods nearly disappeared, her medication requirement reduced by nearly 70%, and medication-related side effects largely resolved. She has since regained independence and recently completed a long international trip.

Hospital Leadership on Expanding Access to World-Class Care

Speaking about the hospital’s focus on advanced neurological services, Saurabh Gupta, Regional Chief Operating Officer, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, stated that the institution aims to bring world-class neurological care closer to patients. He highlighted that DBS surgery is among several advanced treatments unavailable elsewhere in the Thane region. He also noted that KIMS Hospitals, Thane is the only centre in the region offering Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) evaluation and advanced epilepsy surgeries, ensuring patients do not need to travel far for specialised care.

Experts Stress Early Diagnosis and Advanced Therapies

Emphasising the importance of early intervention, Dr Siddharth Kharkar, Consultant Neurologist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, pointed out that Parkinson’s disease is often mistaken for normal ageing, which delays treatment. While medications help in the early stages, many patients eventually require advanced therapies such as DBS. He added that treatments like DBS for Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy surgery for drug-resistant seizures can be life-changing, yet remain limited in availability.

Surgical Precision Delivers Lasting Benefits

As per the press release, explaining the surgical impact, Dr Naren Nayak, Consultant Neurosurgeon at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said that DBS works by regulating abnormal brain signals, thereby improving most Parkinson’s symptoms. With precision surgery, patients with advanced disease can experience excellent outcomes. He also noted that KIMS facilitates access to quick, bloodless Parkinson’s treatment using MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) at its Secunderabad centre, making it the only group in Maharashtra to offer this option.

A Growing Referral Centre for Advanced Neurological Care

With its exclusive DBS capability, KIMS Hospitals, Thane continues to strengthen its position as a key referral centre for advanced epilepsy and Parkinson’s care. The hospital’s multidisciplinary team—including neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, radiologists, nuclear medicine specialists, and social workers—works collaboratively to ensure timely, cost-effective, and life-changing treatment outcomes for patients.
